This watch is from the team of Jochen Benzinger and Kay Jaeger, two of the most well known purveyors of "hand made" products in Germany.
Based in the small village of Baden-Baden, Germany in the Black Forest, Jaeger & Benzinger are preserving the lost art of making watches largely by hand, rather than relying on automated computer controlled CNC machines.
Using the traditional German watchmaking techniques of hand guilloche, hand engraving and hand skeletonization each Jaeger & Benzinger watch is essentially a unique piece since these techniques will never produce an exact copy.
This watch features a stunning hand finished chronograph movement based on a Valjoux 7750. Jochen uses perlage, blued screws, and other decorative techniques to complete the movement design, and then moves on to the rotor.
The rotor is skeletonized with the Jaeger & Benzinger brand initials in rose gold along with elaborate rose engine guilloche.
Like all Jaeger & Benzinger watches the very thing you are likely to notice first is the dial. Also, as in all Jaeger & Benzinger watches, the dial is not machine made or printed.
Instead, the dial is entirely hand-crafted in-house out of sterling silver. The dial is then hand guilloched and engraved on antique and historic rose engines - old world craftsmanship skills that make Jochen Benzinger among the elite in his profession.
The white hands provide a striking contrast to the engraved black dial with matching white Roman numerals.
The sweep seconds sub-dial at 9 is also guilloched completely by hand, and is created on a rose engine. The process of hand guilloche can take hours, and each pattern is essentially unique because of the hand workmanship.
Once completed, Jochen uses a traditional Breguet frost technique with fire and special polishing to create the silver ring around the sub-dial.
This watch is fitted in a robust stainless steel case made in Pforzheim, Germany. The case has sapphire crystal on both the front and back revealing the decorated movement.
