The Red Lion Returns With a 12 Hour Bezel
In the fall of 2021 Hanhart launched the 417 Red Lion Limited Edition, a 39 mm flyback chronograph designed in collaboration with Tristano from the well known Urban Gentry channel on YouTube.
As you can imagine, discussions about another Red Lion limited edition began immediately the following morning.
We are pleased to finally be able to announce the new Hanhart 417 Red Lion MK II Limited Edition, a flyback chronograph with a bi-directional 12 hour steel bezel for dual time functionality, a date display at 6, and a midsize 39 mm case.
The Hanhart 417 Red Lion MK II is limited to a total of just 200 pieces worldwide.
Hanhart X The Urban Gentry
Hanhart designed this new watch in partnership with Gentry Labs, the design arm of
The Urban Gentry, to build upon the historic DNA of the Hanhart 417 Collection by adding even more functionality.
Notable features of this limited edition:
- Bi-directional 12 hour steel bezel (24 clicks) for dual time capability
- "Big Eye" oversized chronograph minutes register at 3 for added legibility
- Red tipped chronograph hands
- Date display at 6
- Red HyCeram® ceramic chronograph reset pusher
- Domed sapphire crystal with interior AR coating
The limited edition number (XXX/200) and "Red Lion MK II" are engraved into the steel perimeter of the case back of each watch, and the Gentry Labs watermark is subtly printed on the interior of the sapphire portion of the transparent case back.
A Nod to the Past
Hanhart is a German watch company that doesn't need to create an "artificial past" for marketing purposes - the company has been continuously producing watches since 1882. The original Hanhart 417 ES Chronograph was one of the most legendary watches produced in the history of Hanhart, and it was the very first pilot's chronograph made for the German armed forces.
The new Hanhart 417 Red Lion MK II also incorporates some more subtle elements from historic Hanhart models, including hands that are curved at the ends to avoid parallax errors due to the domed sapphire crystal.
The hour and minute hands, as well as both chronograph hands, feature SuperLuminova X2 C1 for easy timekeeping in dark conditions. For added legibility, the chronograph seconds and minute hands are red tipped.
The bi-compax two register chronograph layout of the Hanhart 417 Red Lion MK II features a 30 minute register at 3 and a small seconds register at 9. This is the only model in the 417 Collection to feature an oversized "Big Eye" chronograph minute register, a design typically only found in vintage pilot watches.
In keeping with the original design of this historic watch, Hanhart has chosen to use the vintage Hanhart logo on the dial, crown and buckle, as well as the "shockproof", and "flyback" designations on the dial.
New 12 Hour Bezel
Rotating bezels with another set of hour markers began appearing on pilot's watches in the mid 20th century, as the need to track multiple time zones from the cockpit became more and more common. During and after WWII, pilots began flying long distances across multiple time zones with increasing regularity.
Before the widespread adoption of dual time movements, rotating 12 hour bezels offered a practical solution for quickly tracking two time zones. This design required no extra hands or complications, which kept watches mechanically simpler and more resilient in the vibration-prone environment of early cockpits.
12 hour bezels have remained sought after despite the increasing availability of GMT movements because they allow pilots to track multiple time zones without mechanical adjustment.
Manufacture AMT® Calibre 5100 M
The original Hanhart 417 ES Chronograph featured a "Temposchaltung" (flyback complication) with column wheel construction, and Hanhart has been working with Manufacture AMT
® to incorporate those same features into this new chronograph.
Powered by the manually wound AMT5100 M, the clearly visible blue column wheel ensures a smooth operation of the chronograph functions, while the flyback complication allows a quick reset while the chronograph hand is in motion.
This new movement beats at 4 Hertz (28,800 vibrations per hour) boasts an impressive 58 hour power reserve. Since the AMT5100 M is not produced with a date complication, Hanhart adds the date wheel in house.
What is a Flyback Chronograph?
A flyback chronograph is one of the easiest chronographs to operate. Rather than having to remember to stop the chronograph hand before resetting, the HyCeram® ceramic red reset button at 4 may be pressed while the chronograph hand is in motion causing that hand to "fly back" to 0.
This function allows continuous operation of the chronograph when timing multiple events, as one push returns the chronograph hand to 0 but does not stop its operation - it simply starts over to time the next event.

Most chronograph watches in production today are cam actuated, using two layers of metal to receive input from the pushers and transmit that input to the clutch. A column wheel chronograph uses a single part to perform both functions and is often compared to a castle's turret.
The column wheel is more difficult and labor intensive to manufacture than a cam actuated design and requires more skill and patience to complete.
The advantage to a column wheel design is a more precise feel to the operation of the chronograph.
Shock Resistance Technology

This watch features Hanhart's shock resistance system which is designed to better stabilize and protect the movement.
Hanhart has installed gaskets on the front and back of the movement holding ring which allow the movement to slightly move in the event of a drop, hit, or other shock.
This technology is not dissimilar to the way modern buildings are designed in earthquake prone regions to dampen the effects of those shocks.
A Special Strap
This watch is fitted with a tropical style strap made from FKM (Fluorine Kautschuk Material) rubber which offers increased resistance to chemicals as well as extreme temperatures.
FKM rubber is often used in aerospace and automotive environments due to its exceptional resistance to heat, chemicals, oils, and fuels, so it is well suited for those looking for a flexible and sweat resistant strap for everyday life.
If you look closely, you'll notice that the center holes run the entire length of the long side of the strap. This strap is compatible with all wrist sizes up to roughly 8.5".
Strap Length: 80 mm x 125 mm
The strap is completed with an engraved tang buckle with the historic Hanhart logo.
