A Legend Returns
Along with the great success of Hanhart's 417 Chronograph Collection have come a number of requests for special releases and variations, and a white dial has been near the top of the list.
Hanhart and WatchBuys are pleased to announce the return of a very special historic chronograph that will make Hanhart fans very happy - the Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick Chronograph.
A Collector's "White Whale"
Produced briefly more than 60 years ago, the original version of this watch was designed for naval officers and medical personnel.
To clearly differentiate that watch from the typical black dial pilot's chronographs of the time period, Hanhart chose to fit the watch with a white dial and flame blued hands.
Original Hanhart 417 ES "Moby Dick"
Over the decades that followed, that original white dialed chronograph became a coveted piece for collectors of vintage chronographs.
Because so few pieces existed with the white dial and blued hands, the model was fittingly nicknamed "Moby Dick" as an ode to Herman Melville's classic novel detailing Captain Ahab's quest to find the elusive "white whale".
The First German Pilot's Chronograph
The original Hanhart 417 ES Chronograph was the very first pilot's chronograph made for the German armed forces. The "ES" in the title of this watch refers to the German word Edelstahl, which translates to stainless steel.
This watch features a highly domed sapphire crystal, but Hanhart was able to keep the overall height of this watch to only 13.3 mm by using a special case design and a manually wound chronograph movement with a power reserve of 58 hours.
Historic Design
The historic two register chronograph layout of the Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick Chronograph features a 30 minute register at 3 and small seconds at 9.
In keeping with the original design of this historic watch, Hanhart has chosen to use the vintage Hanhart logo on the dial, crown and buckle, as well as the "shockproof" designation on the dial.
Hanhart has designed special thermally blued hands for this new watch, even on the sub dials. If you look closely, you may notice that the tips of the centrally mounted hands are actually bent to reduce the parallax effect.
The case is in stainless steel, and the fluted bi-directional rotating bezel features an off white indicator rather than the red indicator typically found on Hanhart watches.
Important features of this watch include:
- Domed sapphire crystal with interior AR coating
- Satin/polished stainless steel case
- Thermally blued hands
- Screw down case back
- White dial with Light Old Radium GL SuperLuminova
- Power reserve of 58 hours
- Two register chronograph design
- Manually winding movement
- Friction bezel
- Water resistant to 100 meters
Quick Adjust Bracelet
The bracelet on this watch features a quick adjust buckle for tool free micro adjustments.
The bracelet can be lengthened or shortened by up to 10 mm with the quick press of a button, allowing the wearer to dial in their preferred fit without needing to search for a spring bar tool.
The bracelet has a satinized finish and the quick adjust buckle features Hanhart's historic logo.
