Limited Edition

The new Hanhart 417 ES 1954 Tornado Flyback Column Wheel Chronograph was designed by Hanhart in partnership with Panavia Aircraft GmbH, a German aerospace firm established jointly by West Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

This watch commemorates the 50th anniversary of the maiden flight of the Panavia Tornado, which first took off on August 14, 1974.  The German Air Force's fleet of Tornado aircraft contributed to the success of a wide range of combat missions in the decades that followed.

As a nod to that day in history, Hanhart will produce only 148 pieces of this limited edition (14th of August = 14/8).

The "TORNADO" logo is emblazoned across the dial at 6, and the eye catching Panavia Tornado insignia featuring the colors of each nation's flag replaces the traditional sweep seconds register at 9.

The center of the case back features an embossed view of the plane from above and the "TORNADO" logo.  The details of the maiden flight and the limited edition number of the watch are engraved around the perimeter of the case back.

Panavia Tornado

Panavia Tornado
In the 1960s, NATO member countries Germany, the UK, and Italy, noticed a need for a more modern aircraft to replace aging fleets and to meet evolving military requirements.  The Panavia Tornado project was initiated to address the need for a versatile, multirole combat aircraft capable of performing various missions, including air superiority, interdiction, and close air support.

On August 14, 1974, the Tornado took its first flight as part of that new multirole combat initiative.

The plane, painted white and red-orange with the registration number P.01 D-9591, was flown by British pilot Paul Millett and German test pilot Nils Meister. Operating under the radio call sign LUNA 23, the test flight lasted 33 minutes and concluded successfully at Ingolstadt/Manching.

This flight marked a significant milestone in European defense collaboration, leading to the Panavia Tornado being widely adopted by the air forces of Germany, Great Britain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia.

A Tornado GR1 is on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, Ohio.

New Manufacture AMT® Calibre 5100 M

Powered by the manually wound calibre AMT5100 M, the clearly visible blue column wheel ensures a smooth operation of the chronograph functions, while the flyback complication allows a quick reset while the chronograph hand is in motion.

Historic Design

The historic two register chronograph layout of the Hanhart Pioneer 417 ES Tornado Flyback Chronograph features a 30 minute register at 3 and small seconds at 9.

The sweep seconds register at 9 features the Panavia Tornado insignia, and the eye of the white seconds hand has been reduced in size to make the insignia even more visible.

In keeping with the original design of the original model, Hanhart has chosen to use the vintage Hanhart logo on the dial, crown and buckle.

Antimagnetic Technology

Hanhart designed this watch with more than three times the antimagnetic protection to earn a rating of 16,000 A/m.

To achieve this higher rating, Hanhart first changed the dial material from brass to soft iron.  And next, they used a special type of steel both inside and outside of the case to act as a blocking agent.

Shock Resistance Technology

This watch features a new Hanhart shock resistance system to better stabilize and protect the movement.

Hanhart has installed gaskets on the front and back of the movement holding ring which allow the movement to slightly move in the event of a drop, hit, or other shock.

Other Special Features

Hanhart has designed special hands for this watch.  If you look closely, you'll notice that the tips of the hands are slightly bent downward to reduce the parallax effect from the domed sapphire crystal.

The case is in stainless steel with brushed and polished finishes, and is fitted with a fluted bi-directional rotating friction fit bezel with a red indicator.

This watch is fitted with a black calf leather strap is actually lined with Italian Alcantara and includes leather underlay (bund pad) which may be easily removed for those who prefer the look of a traditional strap.

Important features of this watch include:
  • Domed sapphire crystal with interior AR coating
  • Screw down case back with Tornado engravings
  • Matte black dial with old radium SuperLuminova
  • Panavia Tornado insignia at 9, "TORNADO" logo at 6
