The Mars AMADEE-20 Project
In October of this year, the Austrian Space Forum in conjunction with the Israel Space Agency and D-MARS will conduct an integrated Mars analog field mission in the Negev Desert in Israel.
A highly trained field crew with spacesuit simulators will conduct experiments to pave the way for human and robotic exploration of the red planet.
Fortis has been selected to design and supply the team with an official Mars watch that can meet the standards and specifications required by such a project.

The Official Watch of the Mars AMADEE-20 Project
The inspiration for this watch is the famous Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph, a watch that is quite familiar with space exploration. In fact, the model became standard-issue at the Yuri Gugarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia after its release.
The new AMADEE-20 however features a number of new features and upgrades compared to its predecessors.
The build quality of the new Fortis Official Cosmonauts AMADEE-20 Chronograph is superb, due in large part to its titanium case and bracelet which offer extreme durability at a much lighter weight than steel.
The countdown Mission Control Bezel is one of the more unique features of this watch as it has two key marks 10 minutes apart, the delay between radio transmissions to and from Mars.
The official logo of AMADEE-20 is located at 6, and the chronograph hands are in a matching shade of AMADEE blue.
The grey dial is quite distinct, with white applied numerals and
embossed concentric lines contrasting against the dial. The dial itself is a brushed finish which coordinates nicely with the tone of the bezel and titanium case.
Constant seconds are at 9 sweeping around a simple star-shine pattern, which helps solidify the stellar (pun intended) design of this watch. The chronograph features an oversized 30 minute subdial at 12 and a highly legible chronograph seconds hand with an extended arrow tip. Oversized pushers provide for easy operation of all chronograph functions.
The case back features a special engraving of Mars, Earth, their respective moons, and their orbits.
Important features of this watch include:
- Double anti-reflective coating
- Sapphire crystal
- Day/date display at 3
- Water resistant to 200 meters
- Engraved solid case back
- Titanium case and bracelet
- 48 hour power reserve
This watch is fitted with a titanium block bracelet with a quick-adjust buckle. Also included is an adjustable fabric Hook Strap by Nick Mankey Designs with built in stretch for a comfortable fit.
