A Classic Design

The Dekla Deckwatch series is a line of dress watches inspired by classic marine chronometers (deck watches).  The bold numerals, outer railroad track, and cut-out constant seconds subdial come together for a timeless look.  The ruthenium black dial and solid 14K white gold hands give the watch a truly classy feel.

Ruthenium is a rare transition metal belonging to the platinum group of metals, and provides a rich grey/black dial color.

In addition, the Dekla Deckwatch 40 Ruthenium Dial features a traditional manually wound movement visible through the sapphire case back.  This watch is powered by the famed Unitas 6498-1, a pocket watch movement configured for a wristwatch.  The robust Unitas 6498-1 is a manually winding workhorse featured in a wide variety of mechanical watches due to its simple layout and reliability.

Dekla is a German watch manufacture based in Stuttgart.  They specialize in the the building of watch cases, certain movement parts, watch dials, and the production of hands - all in-house.  Their engineering capabilities and hands-on approach allow them to produce watches with a remarkable attention to detail.

What is a Deck Watch?

Prior to the invention of GPS, navigators at sea required accurate timekeeping to determine their location, which was essential for circumventing hazards and maintaining course.  Pendulum clocks and pocket watches, however, were ineffective at providing precise time at sea.  The weights in the pendulum clocks would swing uncontrollably, and pocket watches were often unreliable.  Even if a pocket watch was only marginally inaccurate, over the course of months at sea the slight inaccuracy could position a ship well off course.

In the 18th century, the marine chronometer, also known as a deck chronometer or deck watch, was developed to help reliably determine a vessel’s longitude.  To determine longitude, Greenwich Mean Time was compared to the current time, which could only be calculated using a precise timing instrument and the observation of celestial bodies.

Compared to other timepieces, deck watches were much more accurate and more robust in their design—heavy silver cases allowed for more water resistance, and their wooden casings protected against strikes and abrasions.  They became the most precise timepieces used at sea until the 1940s.

Because deck watches substantially improved oceanic navigation, they were highly revered by sea captains and their crewmembers.  In fact, officers would synchronize their own pocket watches to the captain’s deck watch to create a coordinated timekeeping system.

Many deck watches featured the same basic design elements- bold Arabic or Roman numerals for the hours, a railroad style minute track around the dial, and a subdial for constant seconds typically located at 6.  This classic design would carry over through the invention of modern wristwatches.
