Product Details

When we were invited to Frankfurt recently to celebrate Sinn's 50th Anniversary with CEO Mr. Lothar Schmidt and his staff, we knew to think that something big would be announced, but not this big!

Sinn is known by people who know watches as a company that takes the time to examine the smallest detail of the production process, and where possible to make changes to make it better. This doesn't necessarily mean adding a moon phase to a dial, changing the decoration of the rotor or making a new dial color, but really thinking about the technology behind the watch.

When Mr. Schmidt, was with IWC and Lange & Sohne, he was constantly inventing new processes and procedures to improve the quality of the watch, and today he holds patents for many of his inventions. Fortunately for Sinn and unfortunately for IWC and others some of those patents were not used, so when he had the chance to purchase Sinn he had found a new home for his ideas.

And the new Sinn EZM 10 shows off these technologies in a way that's not overpowering, but yet very evident from wearing and using the watch.

First, a list of what this watch features:
  • The infamous SZ-01 movement modification
  • Case made from Tegimented titanium - a first
  • 24 hour time display
  • DIAPAL oil free escapement
  • Dehumidification technology with inert gas
  • Copper sulphate capsules to protect from fogging and humidity
  • Functionally reliable from –45 °C up to +80°C
  • Push-pieces with Black Hard Coating and Tegimented which are flush with the case
  • Pilot's bezel with minute ratcheting and sapphire glass insert
  • Bezel is screwed to hold it firmly to the case
  • Water resistant to 200 meters
  • Protection in high altitudes from the crystal being pushed off the watch
  • Push-pieces with D3-System to improve the seals against water damage
  • 5 year warranty, almost unheard of with a mechanical watch
  • The EZM 10 designation which means Mission Timer for use with special forces
  • Black Sinn calf leather strap

The Movement

Many of Sinn's earlier chronographs used the Lemania 5100 as the base caliber. This movement proved to be quite popular especially with the military who approved its use primarily based on its use of a large centrally mounted hand to show elapsed minutes.

Since that movement was discontinued, and the Valjoux 7750 did not support these displays, Sinn announced many years ago that one of their goals was to create a number of in-house modifications to replicate the functions of the Lemania 5100.

Little did Sinn know the extent of the modifications that would be necessary, and that this project would extend over eight years.

Specifically, Sinn shows the elapsed minutes through a centrally mounted hand with a distinctive airplane pointer. The watch also features a centrally mounted elapsed second hand as well as an additional time second hand in the register at 9 which runs irrespective of the chronograph.

The result is an easy to read timing system with a large central hand that counts elapsed minutes on a 60 minute scale rather than 30, and a minute stopwatch scale which is visible around the entire circumference of the dial. Adding a 24 hour scale aids in the determination of AM or PM.

The Case

To create the all new case for the Sinn EZM 10, Sinn turned to its casemaking facility in Glashutte, Germany to get the project started. The end result is like nothing we've ever seen from Sinn.

First, the case is not perfectly round. Its dimensions are 44 mm when measuring 6 to 12, and 46.5 mm when measuring 3 to 9. The thickness is 15.6 mm.

And in another first, Sinn figured out a way to Tegiment titanium! Titanium is one of our favorite metals in use today on watches, but because it's so strong titanium cases are very hard to make, can ruin cutting tools and drill bits in a matter of seconds and seem to have a mind of their own.

Now with the new Tegimented titanium case, Sinn has made an already hard metal even harder and more durable, which means your new watch may look brand new in 5 years. We know of a number of watch manufacturers who have quietly removed titanium cases from their collections because of the manufacturing costs and the difficulty in working with this metal, and we are proud to see Sinn not only embrace the metal but discover a way to improve it through the Tegimenting process.

You will notice that the black chronograph pushers are flush with the case. We like this design effect both from an aesthetics point of view, but also from a users point of view. The chronograph is extremely easy to operate with these pushers, and perhaps best of all there are no pushers sticking out that would be unprotected by the case design.

In Summary

We were able to handle and wear this new watch for some time, almost like taking a new Audi S5 on a test track and we knew that we were wearing something special. This watch represents the best of Sinn, taking into account all of its most important technologies and adding some new ones to the list.

The watch feels great on the wrist. The case is comfortable, people ask what you are wearing and the fit and finish would shame watches costing 2 to 3 times more money. Bravo to Sinn for making such a beautiful and stunning timepiece while at the same time embracing those technologies that make a Sinn a Sinn.

Bracelet Options

Please note that we currently do not have any stock of this watch on bracelet, nor do we have the bracelets themselves in stock.

Many clients choose to purchase this watch on strap first, and then use their WatchPoint Rewards earned on the purchase to reduce the price of the bracelet once it arrives. This way you would have the watch with two different looks, and we provide a free tool to change from strap to bracelet and vice versa.

Availability

Since this watch was announced on Sinn's web site and at their 50th Anniversary Party, our phones have been ringing non-stop with one question - when can I get one?

The answer is not simple, so we will tell you what we know and what we don't know. This is obviously the most difficult and time consuming watch to build in the history of Sinn due to all of the modifications and technologies. Sinn is currently producing an extremely small number of watches per month, and we are receiving our allocations in monthly shipments.

The company is running their Glashutte casemaking division almost around the clock as well as adding watchmakers in Frankfurt. We of course would like as many as we can get, but so do Sinn's other authorized international distributors.

So, all we can say now is that Sinn uses a very fair and democratic process to allocate hard to get watches, and we feel confident that our shipments will begin to increase later this year, although very slowly and with only a small number of pieces.

If you'd like to add your name to the reservations list, please complete the form below and you will be the first to know when new pieces arrive.  We are not accepting deposits at this time due to the uncertainty of the delivery date, and completing this form does not obligate you to purchase this watch once we receive new stock.

"My New Sinn EZM 10"

Posted by: Michael

Comments about this watch: Well, I've been wearing the EZM10 for a week now and I continue to be in awe of this engineering marvel. I'm sure I don't need to get in to the fine details with you, but what a fantastic time piece and I am beyond thrilled.

I can't thank you enough for taking such good care of me - it's a pleasure to deal with an honest and trustworthy company who takes pride in their customer service.

This, along with an unsurpassed product line up, is what keeps customers like me coming back.
