This watch is designed for those who love the pure and simple look of vintage Flieger (flight) watches, but prefer the larger case and dial sizes in use today.
The History
For many years, the Sinn 356 series has been a best seller, in all of the different formats. In fact, it remains popular today, even though its case size of 38.5 mm is a bit small for some.
Sinn has been working on a new in-house case design of 42 mm to house their latest Flieger watch at their case making facility in Glashutte, Germany. This case was put into the Sinn line for the first time at the 2011 Basel Watch Fair and was launched as the Sinn 358 Limited Edition. The plan was to roll out all of the Limited Edition pieces (which feature a more heavily modified movement, a different dial layout as well as other special features) and then to follow that piece with the standard Sinn 358 models.
It's All in the Crystal
Unfortunately, Sinn is running a bit behind in completing the Sinn 358 Limited Edition watches due to the complexity of building such a large sapphire crystal that is highly domed, a look that Sinn insisted be a part of this series. When sapphire crystal is highly domed, it must be made in a special way such that the center is actually thicker and stronger than the crystal sides to protect the crystal from shattering.
Further, all of this must be done in a way that the optics do not distort the dial. Sinn is slowly catching up on the limited edition pieces, but will initially release the standard Sinn 358 watches with an acrylic crystal only, with sapphire models to follow in early 2012.
For these reasons, we are receiving the new Sinn 358 series watches with an acrylic cover first, and expect those with sapphire crystal to trickle in by the end of the year.
This is the Sinn 358 Acrylic on strap with a solid case back, and is the least expensive watch in the new Sinn 358 series because of the acrylic cover and the solid back. Some people view acrylic as a negative, while others prize this feature. We explain both sides so that you may make an informed decision.
Acrylic - The Good Points
Acrylic was used on the earliest wristwatches, and is therefore very authentic to the design of the rest of this watch. Pilots used acrylic crystals as they were less expensive to make, could be repaired at a low cost and had a low reflection factor.
Acrylic gives the dial a slight smokey look which we must admit is quite striking on this watch. It's not blurry, but rather an overall feeling in the way that acrylic allows light to pass to the dial. Further, if acrylic should become scratched, damaged or break, it is relatively inexpensive to buy a brand new cover and replace the former.
Finally, using acrylic rather than domed sapphire makes an enormous difference in the price of the watch as domed sapphire is so difficult to make properly.
Acrylic - The Negative Points
People that prefer not to own an acrylic cover point out that it is easy to scratch, and this is true. As a counterpoint however, many of these scratches are easily removed using a tooth brush and toothpaste.
Others don't like the sound when the acrylic is tapped as it sounds like plastic which they associate with cheap, and they also point out that they prefer the absolutely clear light passing through the sapphire crystal.
In summary, there is no right or wrong decision - it comes down to your budget, the features that are important to you and if you will be bothered when the acrylic cover scratches (even knowing that these will probably come out quite easily).
