Why is There a Roulette Wheel on This Watch?
Kay Jaeger and Jochen Benzinger had a very special idea for this watch - create a watch that instantly shows the very special neighborhood of the hometown of their manufacture - Baden-Baden, Germany.
Jaeger & Benzinger chose Baden-Baden as the home for their brand because it represents many of the best things in Germany - historical beauty, hand made goods and a tradition to the Black Forest.
"Baden-Baden" in English loosely translates as "Bath" or "Bathing", as the famouse Aquae or Aurelia Aquensis springs dating back 2000 years are known for their healing properties. Even today the town is home to Friedrichsbad and Caracalla, two of the most famous spas in Europe.
But what's also famous in Baden-Baden is their Kurhaus, or casino. Many have declared the Casino Baden-Baden as the most beautiful casino in the world.
The Casino of Baden-Baden is filled with rich traditions and opulent gaming halls which create the grandiose atmosphere perfect for adventure and nightlife. The casino has welcomed many well-known internationals and entertains with the best.
Kay and Jochen thought it was only appropriate to add some of this local history to showcase a unique aspect of Baden-Baden harmonizing with the watch styles they produce. The handmade roulette sub-dial pays homage to the architectural masterwork that lays in the heart of this city.
A Hand-Made Watch Brand From Baden-Baden
Welcome to the small village of Baden-Baden, Germany in the Black Forest, home to Jaeger & Benzinger watches.
Using the traditional German watchmaking techniques of hand guilloche, hand engraving and hand skeletonization each Jaeger & Benzinger watch is essentially a unique piece since these techniques will never produce an exact copy.
The Dial and Sub-Dial
The first thing you'll notice about this dial is that it is not machine made or printed. That would be too easy.
This dial is made completely by hand and in the workshops of Jaeger & Benzinger. The team first creates the dial in sterling silver, and then applies copper.
The sub-dial is also made completely by hand. This handmade process requires hours to complete and essentially makes each sub-dial unique.
The Movement and Finishing
Jaeger & Benzinger have chosen to finish the movement using a traditional East German watchmaking technique - the three-quarter plate.
This plate is first hand guilloched using a traditional sunray pattern and finished with hand engraving. Finally the plate is finished in rose gold with blued screws and perlage on the base plate.
The balance cock is hand engraved and finished with rose gold, and the movement is protected by a sapphire crystal back.
If you've never seen a movement finished by hand using techniques that date back more than 100 years, you're in for a surprise.
Other Features
This watch is fitted in a stainless steel case made in Pforzheim, Germany.
The anti-reflective sapphire crystal is slightly domed contributing to the classic good looks of this watch. It is interesting to note that the Jaeger & Benzinger chose a style of Arabic italicized numerals found in historical German watchmaking books.
