A Hand-Made Watch Brand From Baden-Baden

Welcome to the small village of Baden-Baden, Germany in the Black Forest, home to Jaeger & Benzinger watches.

Using the traditional German watchmaking techniques of hand guilloche, hand engraving and hand skeletonization each Jaeger & Benzinger watch is essentially a unique piece since these techniques will never produce an exact copy.

The Dial and Sub-Dial

The first thing you'll notice about this dial is that it is not machine made or printed.  That would be too easy.

This dial is made completely by hand and in the workshops of Jaeger & Benzinger.  The team first creates the dial in sterling silver, and then applies rhodium to create the silver color.

Rhodium is a very rare, naturally occurring member of the platinum group of metals.  The properties are extremely durable, able to resist corrosion, abrasion and discoloration.

The sub-dial is also made completely by hand, and is created on a rose engine.  The process of hand guilloche can take hours, and each pattern is essentially unique because of the hand workmanship.  Once completed, liquid rose gold is applied for a stunning contrast to the silver rhodium dial.

The Movement and Finishing

Jaeger & Benzinger have chosen to finish the movement using a traditional East German watchmaking technique - the three-quarter plate.

This plate is first hand guilloched using a traditional sunray pattern and finished with hand engraving.  Finally the plate is finished in rose gold with blued screws and perlage on the base plate.

The balance cock is hand engraved and finished with rhodium, and the movement is protected by a sapphire crystal back.

If you've never seen a movement finished by hand using techniques that date back more than 100 years, you're in for a surprise.

Other Features

This watch is fitted in a stainless steel case made in Pforzheim, Germany with onion crown.

The anti-reflective sapphire crystal is slightly domed contributing to the classic good looks of this watch.  The dial is finished with Roman numerals.

This watch is fitted with a dark gray leather strap with a tang buckle.

Watch specifications are provided by the respective watch manufacturer and/or other sources. Although we use best efforts to provide accurate information, we reserve the right to make corrections when advised of specification changes and/or content errors.

The Rose Engine

The rose engine is a type of geometric lathe, many of which date back more than 100 years.

Operated entirely by hand, each cut must be precisely made or the entire watch component is ruined and must be started again.

There are very few craftsmen in the world who are trained as experts in the operations of rose engines, engine turning and hand guilloche, and these techniques are employed in all Jaeger & Benzinger watches on both the three-quarter plate and the sub-dial.

Rose Engine

The Graver

This hand tool is the same as employed by the 16th century German painter and engraver Albrecht Durer.

Jaeger & Benzinger uses these graver tools to cut and decorate movement parts.

Skeleton Saw

A skeleton saw (or "fine fretsaw") is usually associated with work done by master goldsmiths, but Jaeger & Benzinger use this tool to create the skeletonizing of the bridges.

Watch Skeletonizating

Jaeger & Benzinger watches are proudly handmade by Jochen Benzinger in Germany.

Beautiful watch with old school craftsmanship

"Beautiful watch with old school craftsmanship"

Verified Owner Comments: Very happy with my new Jaeger & Benzinger.

The watch is large for a dress, but wears pretty well despite 42mm diameter. The old school craftsmanship attracted me and overall look sold me. The rose gold subdial is guilloche, 3/4 plate is gold with hand engine turned, and balance cock is beautifully engraved.

Accuracy has been very good and power reserve is an impressive 52-55 hrs long. The watch comes on a Di-modell strap - very good quality. I did find the strap a bit long, but once anchor is cut, it works fine.

Overall watch is very impressive and amount of hand work involved makes it a great deal for the price
