The New Edition 6 Collection
We are proud to present the Jaeger & Benzinger Edition 6, a brand new watch featuring a highly decorated vintage movement, hand guilloched dial, and flame blued hands — all housed in a stunning black 38 mm case that is just 8 mm thick.
The name "Moire" alludes to the unique guilloche pattern on the dial which gently ripples away from the center post.
This watch is from the team of Jochen Benzinger and Kay Jaeger, two of the most well known purveyors of "hand made" products in Germany.
Based in the small village of Baden-Baden, Germany in the Black Forest, Jaeger & Benzinger are preserving the lost art of making watches largely by hand, rather than relying on automated computer controlled CNC machines.
Using the traditional German watchmaking techniques of hand guilloche, hand engraving and hand skeletonization each Jaeger & Benzinger watch is essentially a unique piece since these techniques will never produce an exact copy.
Reviving The AS1130 Calibre
We were pleasantly surprised when Jochen let us know that he was recently able to secure a small quantity of new AS1130 movements dating from the 1970s.
The A. Schild AS1130 is a manually winding watch movement with central hour and minute hands and a seconds register at 6. This calibre is renowned for its durability and historical significance, and over the last 50 years it has become sought after by vintage watch collectors.
Established by Adolph Schild in 1896 in Grenchen, A. Schild S.A. was a leading watch movement manufacture for over 80 years until the acquisition of the brand in 1978.
The company grew to be a major and influential producer of ébauche (movement blanks) and was known for creating dependable and affordable mechanical movements. A. Schild played a significant role in establishing Switzerland as a dominant player in the global watch industry during the 20th century.
The reliability of the AS1130 under demanding conditions made it a common choice for watches designated for military use. From the late 1930s through the 1960s, this calibre was featured in a large number of timepieces issued by the German military.
Simple in form and function, the AS1130 was favored by watchmakers and became a preferred choice for many civilian watches as well.
The Hand Guilloched Dial
Like all Jaeger & Benzinger watches, what you are likely to notice first is the dial. Also, as in all Jaeger & Benzinger watches, the dial is not machine made or printed.
Instead, the dial is entirely hand-crafted in-house. The dial is hand guilloched and engraved on antique and historic rose engines - old world craftsmanship skills that make Jochen Benzinger among the elite in his profession.
The Breguet style hands are flame blued and provide a striking contrast to the engraved black rhodium dial and copper ring. The black Arabic numerals and markers allow for easy legibility.
The 38 mm Case
This watch is housed in a 38 mm stainless steel case made in Pforzheim, Germany. The case features striking black PVD finish, sapphire crystals on both the front and back, and an onion crown at 3.
Because the vintage movement in this piece is only 3.8 mm thick, Jochen was able to reduce the overall height of the watch to a remarkably thin 8 mm.
