Product Details

This is the latest addition to the Jaeger & Benzinger collection of hand made watches and is called "Edition 4".

There are two variations of the new Edition 4 - this model features a hand skeletonized movement in rose gold, and a second model features a hand skeletonized movement in contrasting black and silver.

The new Edition 4 features a beautifully rose engine guilloched silver dial with Roman numerals.

We love the pattern Jochen Benzinger has chosen for the guilloche on this watch, and together with the flamed blued hands the contrast is both striking and elegant.

Jochen has chosen a rose gold decoration for the hand engraved movement.

This new watch is from the team of Jochen Benzinger and Kay Jaeger, two of the most well known purveyors of "hand made" products in Germany.

Based in the small village of Baden-Baden, Germany in the Black Forest, Jaeger & Benzinger are preserving the lost art of making watches largely by hand, rather than relying on automated computer controlled CNC machines.

Using the traditional German watchmaking techniques of hand guilloche, hand engraving and hand skeletonization each Jaeger & Benzinger watch is essentially a unique piece since these techniques will never produce an exact copy.

The Dial

Like all Jaeger & Benzinger watches the very thing you are likely to notice first is the dial.  Also, as in all Jaeger & Benzinger watches, the dial is not machine made or printed.

Instead, the dial is entirely hand-crafted in-house out of sterling silver.  The dial is then hand guilloched in a windmill pattern and engraved on antique and historic rose engines - old world craftsmanship skills that make Jochen Benzinger among the elite in his profession.

The Case

This watch is fitted in a stainless steel 42 mm case made in Pforzheim, Germany. The case has sapphire crystal on both the front and back.

The Rose Engine

The rose engine is a type of geometric lathe, many of which date back more than 100 years.

Operated entirely by hand, each cut must be precisely made or the entire watch component is ruined and must be started again.

There are very few craftsmen in the world who are trained as experts in the operations of rose engines, engine turning and hand guilloche, and these techniques are employed in all Jaeger & Benzinger watches on both the three-quarter plate and the sub-dial.

The Graver

This hand tool is the same as employed by the 16th century German painter and engraver Albrecht Durer.

Jaeger & Benzinger uses these graver tools to cut and decorate movement parts.

Skeleton Saw

A skeleton saw (or "fine fretsaw") is usually associated with work done by master goldsmiths, but Jaeger & Benzinger use this tool to create the skeletonizing of the bridges.
