A New Chronograph Collection

It's finally here!

This new Jaeger & Benzinger Chronograph is a watch that has been highly requested and quietly rumored over the years.  We definitely think it was worth the wait.

This piece is packed with all the features Benzinger fans love: a highly decorated movement, hand guilloched blue dial with Arabic numerals, and classic Breguet hands complete with two ornate options for the hand guilloched rotor.

The overall design of this watch fits in so perfectly within the rest of the Jaeger & Benzinger lineup that at first you may not even notice it is a chronograph.  Jochen used his traditional styling to create a minimalist but effective chronograph layout with central chronograph seconds and a 30 minute register at 12.  The chronograph pushers are subtle in shape, but simple to operate.

Traditional German Craftsmanship

This watch is from the team of Jochen Benzinger and Kay Jaeger, two of the most well known purveyors of "hand made" products in Germany.

Based in the small village of Baden-Baden, Germany in the Black Forest, Jaeger & Benzinger are preserving the lost art of making watches largely by hand, rather than relying on automated computer controlled CNC machines.

Using the traditional German watchmaking techniques of hand guilloche, hand engraving and hand skeletonization each Jaeger & Benzinger watch is essentially a unique piece since these techniques will never produce an exact copy.

The Automatic Chronograph Movement

If you've never seen a movement finished by hand using techniques that date back more than 100 years, you're in for a surprise.

This watch features a stunning hand finished chronograph movement based on the prominent Valjoux 7750 with a power reserve of approximately 45 hours.  Jochen uses perlage, blued screws, and other decorative techniques to complete the movement design, and then moves on to the rotor.

Jochen offers a choice between two unique rotor styles for this piece:
  • Standard: hand guilloched full disc with spiral design, finished in white rhodium with a window showing the decorated movement underneath
  • Optional upgrade: skeletonized and hand guilloched with "JB" initials (or your initials) in rose gold contrasting against the white rhodium finish of the rotor
Please reference the section at the bottom of this page for relevant pricing info and additional customization options.

The Hand Crafted Blue Dial

With all Jaeger & Benzinger watches, the thing you are likely to notice first is the dial.  Like all other Jaeger & Benzinger watches, the dial of this watch is not machine made or printed.

Instead, the blue dial is entirely hand crafted in-house from sterling silver.  The dial, along with the chronograph minutes register at 12, is hand guilloched and engraved on antique and historic rose engines.  The hands provide a striking contrast to the engraved blue dial and are complemented by white Arabic numerals.

The process of hand guilloche can take hours, and each pattern is essentially unique because of the hand workmanship.  Old world craftsmanship skills are what place Jochen Benzinger among the elite in his profession.

The 42.6 mm Case

This watch is fitted in a robust 42.6 mm stainless steel case made in Pforzheim, Germany.  The bezel is polished and sloped at approximately 45 degrees, creating a simple and smooth visual transition from the crystal to the lugs.

The case has sapphire crystal on both the front and back revealing the decorated movement.  Fittingly, the case back is engraved with "UNIKATE" which means "unique" in German.

Pricing Note - Optional Engraved and Skeletonized Rotor

This new watch is optionally offered with a hand engraved and skeletonized rotor with the brand initials "JB" (or your initials) for an additional $650 (as shown in the picture at the top of this page).

The watch price shown on this page is for the hand guilloched rotor finished in white rhodium and does not include this optional rotor - you will be able to choose your preferred rotor on the reservations page at this link.

If you prefer your two letter initials rather than "JB" you may also choose that option for an additional $650 to the price shown on this page.

The Rose Engine

The rose engine is a type of geometric lathe, many of which date back more than 100 years.

Operated entirely by hand, each cut must be precisely made or the entire watch component is ruined and must be started again.

There are very few craftsmen in the world who are trained as experts in the operations of rose engines, engine turning and hand guilloche, and these techniques are employed in all Jaeger & Benzinger watches on both the three-quarter plate and the sub-dial.

The Graver

This hand tool is the same as employed by the 16th century German painter and engraver Albrecht Durer.

Jaeger & Benzinger uses these graver tools to cut and decorate movement parts.

Skeleton Saw

A skeleton saw (or "fine fretsaw") is usually associated with work done by master goldsmiths, but Jaeger & Benzinger use this tool to create the skeletonizing of the bridges.
