New Size - Now Available in a Midsize Case

The popularity of the 42 mm Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick Chronograph was no surprise to us when it was released, after all the design was based off of an extremely collectible vintage Hanhart chronograph.

Since then, we received repeated requests for a 39 mm variant from those seeking a more midsize white dial chronograph.  We are pleased to announce that the day is finally here.

There are four primary differences between the larger 42 mm Moby Dick and this model:
  • Case size is 39 mm rather than 42 mm
  • New antimagnetic technology rated to 16,000 A/m
  • New shock protection technology
  • Dial is marked "shockproof" and "antimagnetic"

A Collector's "White Whale"

Produced briefly more than 60 years ago, the original version of this watch was designed for naval officers and medical personnel.

To clearly differentiate that watch from the typical black dial pilot's chronographs of the time period, Hanhart chose to fit the watch with a white dial and flame blued hands.

Original Hanhart 417 ES "Moby Dick"

Over the decades that followed, that original white dialed chronograph became a coveted piece for collectors of vintage chronographs.

Because so few pieces existed with the white dial and blued hands, the model was fittingly nicknamed "Moby Dick" as an ode to Herman Melville's classic novel detailing Captain Ahab's quest to find the elusive "white whale".

The First German Pilot's Chronograph

The original Hanhart 417 ES Chronograph was the very first pilot's chronograph made for the German armed forces.  The "ES" in the title of this watch refers to the German word Edelstahl, which translates to stainless steel.

This watch features a highly domed sapphire crystal, but Hanhart was able to keep the overall height of this watch to only 13.6 mm by using a special case design and a manually wound chronograph movement with a power reserve of 58 hours.

Historic Design

The historic two register chronograph layout of the Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick Chronograph features a 30 minute register at 3 and small seconds at 9.

In keeping with the original design of this historic watch, Hanhart has chosen to use the vintage Hanhart logo on the dial, crown and buckle, as well as the "shockproof" designation on the dial.

Hanhart has designed special thermally blued hands for this watch, even on the sub dials.  If you look closely, you may notice that the tips of the centrally mounted hands are actually bent to reduce the parallax effect.

The case is in stainless steel, and the fluted bi-directional rotating bezel features an off white indicator rather than the red indicator typically found on Hanhart watches.

Antimagnetic Technology

The majority of mechanical watches produced today have an antimagnetic rating of 4,800 A/m, which has proven challenging to block the magnetic effects from modern gadgets such as cell phones, tablets, and other electronic equipment.

Hanhart designed this watch with more than three times the antimagnetic protection to earn a rating of 16,000 A/m.

To achieve this higher rating, Hanhart first changed the dial material from brass to soft iron.  And next, they used a special type of steel both inside and outside of the case to act as a blocking agent.

The result is a watch much less likely to require a watch demagnetizer to maintain accurate timekeeping.

Shock Resistance Technology

This watch features Hanhart's shock resistance system to better stabilize and protect the movement.

Hanhart has installed gaskets on the front and back of the movement holding ring which allow the movement to slightly move in the event of a drop, hit, or other shock.

This technology is not dissimilar to the way modern buildings are designed in earthquake prone regions to dampen the effects of those shocks.

A first for Hanhart, the bracelet on this watch features a quick adjust buckle for tool free micro adjustments.

The bracelet can be lengthened or shortened by up to 10 mm with the quick press of a button, allowing the wearer to dial in their preferred fit without needing to search for a spring bar tool.

The bracelet has a satinized finish and the quick adjust buckle features Hanhart's historic "wings" logo.
