This watch is designed for those who love the pure and simple look of vintage Flieger (flight) watches, but prefer the larger case and dial sizes in use today.
The History
For many years, the Sinn 356 series has been a best seller, in all of the different formats. In fact, it remains popular today, even though its case size of 38.5 mm is a bit small for some.
Sinn has been working on a new in-house case design of 42 mm to house their latest Flieger watches at their case making facility in Glashutte, Germany. This case was put into the Sinn line for the first time at the 2011 Basel Watch Fair and was launched as the Sinn 358 Limited Edition.
It's All in the Crystal
When sapphire crystal is highly domed, it must be made in a special way such that the center is actually thicker and stronger than the crystal sides to protect the crystal from shattering.
Further, all of this must be done in a way that the optics do not distort the dial.
The Sinn 358 DIAPAL does use a highly domed sapphire crystal on the front and a flat sapphire crystal on the back.
The Technology
Beginning in 1995, Sinn began work to create an oil free escapement. With any mechanical watch movement, the aging of oil, especially in the escapement can create long term problems for that movement. Additionally, as movement oil ages, required service intervals become more frequent.
Sinn's early analysis to this problem provided a quick solution (at least in theory) - if you don’t use oil, it can’t age. The process began by exchanging the ruby escapements for diamonds (the word “DIAPAL” derives from the German name for diamond escapements, “Diamantpaletten”) in order to achieve the desired effect. The designation stuck, even though today Sinn works with solutions taken from advanced nanotechnology rather than diamonds.
The result is a movement that proves so reliable that Sinn offers an unprecedented five year warranty on their DIAPAL watches.
The case features a copper sulphate capsule which reacts with moisture to diffuse and absorb humidity in the watch. The case back is nickel free offering protection to those with allergic reactions to this metal.
Satin-brushed stainless steel case with sapphire crystal back. Dial is anthracite with black sub-dials, Arabic numerals and offset date display at 3. We have to say this is one of the most striking dials we have ever seen on a watch and is electroplated to make the dial UV resistant (it won't fade over time due to exposure to the sun). The design and layout of this watch make it extremely easy to read in virtually all light conditions.
Domed sapphire crystal with luminous hands and hour markers. The UTC feature or second time zone is indicated by an additional hour hand (pointing to 7 in our photograph). This hand can "hide" under the primary hour hand when the second time zone function is not needed so the watch will appear as a single time zone watch. Watch is water resistant to 100 meters.
Other Features
Sinn has also their Dehumidifcation Technology to this watch through the use of inert gas to reduce humidity inside the case and to prevent the dial from fogging and the use of special Sinn oil protects this watch from extreme temperature changes (from –45 °C up to +80°C ).
This watch is also tested to be low pressure resistant. As it is exposed to high altitudes, the pressure outside the watch falls, and can cause pressure to build up under the acrylic cover pushing it out. Special design features have been incorporated into this watch to ensure that the cover cannot pop loose from the case.
