The Nomos Orion series has always been one of the most refined in the Nomos collection. From the beautifully sculptured case to the slightly domed sapphire crystal, the Orion literally molds to the wrist.
Beautiful silver plated dial with silver applied markers. The dial contains an off-center subsidiary seconds dial. The dial is first sand blasted, then bathed in silver to provide the unique Nomos coloring. The baton hands are made of polished steel.
Nomos has added two new features to the latest Orion Datum - an increased case size (from 35 mm to 38 mm) and a larger date display at 6. Just like its predecessor, this watch features the Nomos in-house manually winding movement.
During our visit to the Nomos workshops, we saw first hand the production of these movements, including all of the intricate operations necessary to cut and clean the metal using two separate locations in the very small village of Glashutte, Germany.
The movement begins with a traditional Glashutte 3/4 plate which is rhodium plated and decorated with Glashutte ribbing and Langeleist perlage.
Next, the ratchet and crown wheels are decorated with traditional Glashutte starburst patterns. Finely blued screws are used throughout, and other features include Triovis fine adjustment in four positions, hack mechanism, Nomos click, and power reserve of 42 hours.
The case is made in a special steel alloy which is nickel-free. When you purchase this watch from WatchBuys, your name and serial number are registered entitling you to a manufacturer's warranty. Sapphire crystal on front and back.
And last but not least - the strap. Nomos watches use hand stitched straps made from Shell Cordovan. The leather is very smooth, durable, water-resistant and extremely long-lived.
New Large Date Display
This watch features a new patented Nomos large date display. This date display is not only easier to read because of its larger size, it's also printed in the typography used on the overall dial design.
To make room for all of the additional parts required for this new large date display, the overall case size of the watch has been increased from earlier models.
The Nomos watchmakers themselves are also excited about the new design. In the words of design engineer Mirko Heyne, "We love simple and elegant solutions. It's nice that the patented Nomos date mechanism works in almost all of our models, even when it's enlarged."
