The Nomos Ludwig has long been admired for its classic good looks and Roman numeral dial. Now, Nomos is offering the Ludwig with an automatic winding movement and a larger case size of 40 mm and date display.
The Nomos Ludwig features an in-house automatic winding movement with sapphire crystal back. During our visit to the Nomos workshops, we saw first hand the production of these movements, including all of the intricate operations necessary to cut and clean the metal using two separate locations in the very small village of Glashütte, Germany.
The movement begins with a traditional Glashütte 3/4 plate which is rhodium plated and decorated with Glashütte ribbing and Langeleist perlage.
Next, the ratchet and crown wheels are decorated with traditional Glashütte starburst patterns. Finely blued screws are used throughout, and other features include Triovis fine adjustment in four positions, hack mechanism and Nomos click.
Mirko Heyne, the design engineer responsible for the automatic winding movement, explains their use of a strong mainspring and a large balance to obtain a highly accurate rate. Mirko is quoted as saying "The accuracy of the rate is excellent. The deviation is considerably less than one minute a week, a performance on par with the accuracy of a certified chronometer."
Using larger components to obtain a good accuracy rate required the power of a large and heavy bidirectional rotor. Mirko comments that "The radius of the Nomos rotor is larger than the radius of rotors in comparable watches, and this bigger radius translates into more efficient winding."
In addition to being highly accurate, this watch is extremely comfortable to wear thanks to its uniquely designed lugs. Be sure to expand the picture above, and you will be able to see the curved pattern in the lugs which causes the watch to mold to the wrist.
Beautiful silver plated dial with Roman numeral markings.. The dial contains an off-center subsidiary seconds dial. The dial is first sand blasted, then bathed in silver to provide the unique Nomos coloring. The hands are made of polished steel and then flame blued.

And last but not least - the strap. Nomos watches use hand stitched straps made from Shell Cordovan. The leather is very smooth, durable, water-resistant and extremely long-lived.
New Large Date Display
This watch features a new patented Nomos large date display. This date display is not only easier to read because of its larger size, it's also printed in the typography used on the overall dial design.
To make room for all of the additional parts required for this new large date display, the overall case size of the watch has been increased from earlier models.
