Product Details

When we first saw the smile on Thilo Muhle's face at this year's Basel Watch Fair, we knew that he had a special watch to show to us.

Thilo is the Managing Director of Muhle Glashutte, a company that knows something about Search and Rescue (SAR) watches having released their first SAR almost nine years ago. That watch was an instant hit then, and remains a best seller in the line today.

Thilo mentioned that the company's goal was to "extend the line" and create an all new Search and Rescue Flieger Chronograph, and from the moment we first saw this watch we knew waiting for the first pieces to arrive would not be easy.

The Muhle Glashutte SAR Flieger Chronograph was designed in collaboration with the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger) and rescue pilots in the German Navy. These pilots are often called on to help people in distress, and using Sea King helicopters they stand ready to provide search and rescue services at a moment's notice.

During their rescue operations, the Navy rescue pilots are dependent on very robust equipment. With a starting weight of 9.3 tons and 3,000 PS engine power the Sea King MK 41, the German Navy’s rescue helicopter, can operate even in the most adverse weather conditions.

These pilots told Muhle Glashutte that they required a chronograph watch that would enable the calculation of flight speeds while at the same time withstand the tough conditions in which they worked each day.

This watch is big, bold and tough, measuring a full 44 mm in diameter. The start pusher has been enlarged and relocated to 8, making it easier to operate by thumb, even through pilots' gloves. The markings of the pushers and the subdials are in the color of the SAR signal markers, and provide for excellent legibility. The sapphire crystal is thick and slightly domed at 2.5 mm.

The clearly marked 10-second scale is particularly important to the crew members of the rescue helicopters because it allows time measurements for calculating the flight speed to be taken and the watch can be used as an independent back-up system to support the dashboard instruments.

Technical Information

This watch is powered by Muhle Glashutte's calibre MU 9408 (base Valjoux 7750) which has been modified to add a solid German 3/4 plate and a patented woodpecker neck regulation designed in-house by Muhle. This regulation ensures uniform timekeeping under harsh conditions.

Thilo Muhle adds that "thanks to the fine regulation we developed in 2003, our movements have a real technical advantage over watches with traditional regulation systems".

The case is in stainless steel and features a unidirectional bezel with anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The case back is transparent to view the movement and rotor decorated in traditional Glashutte style. Other features include a screw down crown, SuperLuminova hands and indices and water resistance to 10 bars.

Rubber strap with folding buckle.

"SAR Flieger Chronograph"

Comments about this watch: Great looking watch and very functional! I love the satin finish and the controls on the opposite side really do make it easier to operate and keeps your wrist flexible. The oversize chrono control is large enough to elicit the occasional comment but does not look over the top (like a Graham for example). Very bold, yet understated, big but does not feel heavy. the workmanship and quality are second to none. Definitely a watch that looks like it's up for anything the wearer can throw at it!!!
