We continue to be amazed by this watch - it is in fact the first time that Jochen Benzinger has produced a jump hour (zeitsprung) complication.
What makes this watch so interesting is not only the end result, but what's under the hood. Jochen was able to locate a limited number of the extremely rare Kasper Calibre 1415 to use as a basis for this watch. Emil Kaspar & Co. was the first ebauche company in Pforzheim to make in-house movements, and from 1911 through the 1970's produced small numbers of the highest quality German mechanical watch movements.
Unfortunately, the company fell victim to the mass produced quartz movements from Japan and Switzerland as did many other German and Swiss movement manufacturers, so the limited number of new Kasper movements that remain today are quite rare.
Jochen and his master watchmaker went to work transforming the German Kasper movement into a jump hour complication, a feat that was in no way easy. Many modifications to the base movement were required to create the jump hour function, and we can attest to many hours spent to ensure that the jump from one hour to the next was smooth, quick and precisely at 60.
You'll notice that there are no minute or hour hands on this watch. The hours are represented by Roman numerals which jump one position each time the minute counter, shown as a disc with Arabic numerals reaches 60. The combination of Roman and Arabic displays, as well as the use of discs to show the time creates a unique way to tell time.
The result of these efforts is the new Jochen Benzinger Zeitsprung in Steel, another "work of art" that is engraved, guilloched and finished entirely by hand (and with hand tools). Jochen has used rich colors in decorating the movement, including rose gold, silver and deep blue. The contrasts and different engraved patterns create an interesting depth to the movement.
The dial is guilloched completely by hand. We must make a distinction about the type of guilloche work done by Jochen - each dial takes many hours of hand engraving on machines driven by leather straps. We invite you to click here to learn more about the process and see the actual machines used in his workshop. This type of hand guilloche, or engine turned dial, is extremely rare, as most guilloche dials today are either stamped or made by computer navigated engraving machines.
We watched the creation of one of these dials while visiting Jochen, and admit that we simply would not have the patience required to make the smallest of patterns (not to mention the talent).
The 40 mm case features a coin edge finish and onion crown. The case itself has been bead blasted to a matte finish.

This watch ships with a black Benzinger calf leather strap and deployant buckle.
This is a great watch with an unusual German movement which is modified in house with an interesting complication.
