Product Details

We had heard so many things about Dirk, his father Dieter and their small workshop in the former eastern German village of Kalbe, Saxony-Anhalt, that we had to go there ourselves to see if it was true - and it is. We saw first hand watches being made by hand, in the tradition of the finest German techniques. No computer aided graphics, no robot guided engraving machines, no assembly line movement construction and best of all, no sense of urgency.

Dornblueth watches are made according to Dirk's time, one by one. The total production is often just eight pieces in one month, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. Dirk cuts the metal, designs the movements, and creates virtually every piece of the watch himself, in his small workshop converted from a garage. Each watch takes time, a lot of time, and for this reason, no two watches are exactly the same.

The Dornblueth & Sohn Calibre 99.1 is a modification to Dirk's original design, the 99.0, and features an expanded size and placement of the sub seconds display. This may seem to be a small achievement, but in fact it is quite an engineering feat. Dirk together with a long time family friend who is also a watchmaker created a cantilevered second pinion with friction spring that is indirectly driven below the train through an intermediate gear.

Everything is here - 3/4 plate, beveled edges, screw balance wheel, swan neck regulation, engraved balance cock, screwed gold chatons, and blued screws (by flame of course, including the slots).

And now the extras. The name "D. Dornblueth & Sohn, Kalbe i./S.A." is hand engraved and not machine engraved, a virtually rarity on any watch. And all of the decoration (Côtes de Genve and the sunray finish on the crown wheel and ratchet) are all done in-house, by hand. You'll notice that the movement is rose gold in appearance - this process itself is elaborate. After cutting and polishing the plate, Dirk treats the surface to turn the metal a copper color. After all of the drilling and milling operations are complete, the movement itself is treated with rose gold to enhance the deep color.

The dial is coated in silver, and is matte finished with black applied Arabic numerals and Glashutte "railroad track" markings around both the dial and subdial. Blued steel hands.

This watch features a brushed and polished nickel-free steel case and the crown is signed D. Dornblueth. Power reserve is 50 hours.

This watch ships on a black calf leather Dornblueth strap with Dornblueth stamped tang buckle.

WatchBuys has been working with Dirk Dornblueth and his team as their official North American distributor since his very early days.

We are honored to have been selected by Dirk to represent both his watches and his brand.

Our long association with Dornblueth & Sohn ensures that we know not only their watches, but also their manufacturing processes, movement designs and delivery timelines.

Please do not hesitate to contact us at (888) 333-4895 to speak with us about Dornblueth & Sohn watches.  We'll take the time to answer your questions in detail and to provide advice on selecting a new watch.

We visit Dirk each year at his workshops in Kalbe, Germany and during the BaselWorld show to stay up to date on all new models.

Watch Reviews

Comments about this watch: This is a very special time piece.

You can see the beauty in it simplicity and craftsmanship. Knowing that the pieces are done by hand also adds to its amazing character. I have removed the black strap that came with it, and I opted for a Greg S strap that I was able to customize to the leather and stitching that I wanted.

I could not be happier with this watch or the service I received during my purchase.

Great watch
